A good friend of mine found this in a pile of stamps from the attic of his wife’s parents.  He asked if I knew of this case, poor fellow.  I went through the whole story starting with Eleazor, ‘500 gallons of rum’, the NH legislature’s attempted takeover, complicity of John Wheelock and of course Daniel Webster’s role.  Moved on to the 5-1 Supreme Court decision from the Marshall court and its significance long term for contract litigation.  Apparently this stamp was issued in 1969, not to commemorate the bicentennial of the college, but the 150th anniversary of the Trustees of Dartmouth College vs. Woodward.  Of course, I had to also describe the huge mural in Thayer portraying Webster and “It is, sir as I have said, a small college, and yet there are those who love it.”

As an aside, this stamp has appreciated by 1300%
