Classmate Sandy Alderson will join us for his second (!) Casual Conversation on Zoom on Sunday, March 15 at 3 pm Eastern Time.  The first time he spoke with us about baseball, 48 people were on the video call.  This time the subject is baseball again, but with one caveat: “Everything baseball but NOT the Yankees.”   For this session, that team is a seven letter word which should be treated as the FCC once upon a time viewed “b-----d.’

Before the Casual Conversation, Sandy has told me that he will provide a list of the topics that he will be discussing but don’t hold him to any particular outline.  Perhaps the best model would be Hal Holbrook’s Performance as Mark Twain where the program stated that Mr. Twain may discuss some of the following listed subjects—or not.  Sandy (not Mark Twain) will be sharing with us his personal stories from a lifetime in baseball, including many behind the scenes episodes, like the time he met Queen Elizabeth II at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium.  (In case you’re wondering how we got there, I shared with Sandy that I was present when Oriole Mark Belanger hit one of his rare home runs.  Sandy said that he was talking about The Blade just the other day: No longer is there a place for a shortstop who can only field; fielding and hitting are required.)

So, there you have it: The Blade and the Queen, both at Memorial Stadium, although probably not at the same time.  But Sandy was there for each!

If you don’t know about Sandy’s illustrious career, shame on you.  But for those who need a prompting, and at our age who doesn’t, Sandy has provided the following courtesy of ChatGPT:

That’s all: No book, no scholarly articles, no academic lectures.  Just you, your questions and your memories—old or new.

Let me know by COB next Friday if you plan on joining us.  Email me at arthur.fergenson@ansalaw.com .
