Dear ’69 Classmates,

In just a few days (May 18-20), the 214th Alumni Council will be meeting in Hanover.  As the class representative to Alumni Council, I want to give you a sense of what is on the agenda for this meeting and to solicit your thoughts concerning questions to raise and topics about which you would like to hear more when I report back to the class after the meeting.

One of the features of special interest for our class is a session on the Dartmouth Vietnam Project, “an initiative which trains Dartmouth undergraduates to collaborate with older members of the Dartmouth community [that’s us!] in the production of oral histories about the Vietnam War era.”  This session will be presented by Professor Edward Miller, a co-founding director of the Dartmouth Vietnam Project, and Professor Jennifer Miller, a specialist on U.S.-Asian—especially U.S.-Japanese—relations, and students involved in the project.

I’m especially looking forward to a session, “Small Place, Big Ambitions: How Teaching and Learning Are Changing at Dartmouth”, presented by Lisa Baldez, Professor of Government and of Latin American, Latino and Caribbean Studies; and Cheheyl Professor and Director, Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning.

The interplay at Dartmouth between the College and its professional schools is always of interest, and at this meeting there will be a panel discussion, “Thayer: How Engineering + Liberal Arts = National Leadership”, moderated by Joseph J. Helble, Dean of the Thayer School of Engineering, with John Currier ’79, Th’81, Thayer School research engineer (and CEO of MVP, the company that created the Mobile Virtual Player, the mobile tackling dummy made famous by its appearance with Coach Buddy Teevens on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert) ; Ryan Halter, Assistant Professor of Engineering, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Surgery, Geisel School of Medicine; Vicki May, Professor of Engineering; and Petra Bonfert-Taylor, Professor of Engineering.

In addition, there will be updates and Q&A with President Phil Hanlon, with the new Chair of the Board of Trustees Laurel Richie ’81, and with Vice President for Communications Justin Anderson, among others.

I will send a report to you a couple of weeks after the meeting, once I have received the official minutes, etc.  I hope to see many classmates at any of the upcoming class events, and especially at Homecoming, as we build the momentum toward our 50th Reunion.

With best wishes,
