Edward "Ed" Thain Ramey, 79, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at his home in Denver.

Ed was born in Baltimore, Maryland on February 28, 1947, to Evelyn and Ed Ramey. When he was entering third grade the family moved to Denver as the Martin Marietta Corporation opened an office here. He always said that his dad put man on the moon!

After graduating from Lakewood High School in 1965, Ed earned a BA/Economics at Dartmouth College, his JD at the University of Colorado School of Law, and an MBA at the University of Denver. He was a Captain in the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army during the Vietnam War.

Ed was passionate in his practice of law which ranged from civil rights litigation to environmental protection and conservation issues, academic freedom and education law, governmental processes, election and campaign finance law, animal protection, disability and employment discrimination matters, and prison law.

Still a bachelor at age 39, he met Catherine Newport in a friend's kitchen. They were married at the Manor House in Ken Caryl on June 10, 1988. On October 31, 1989, they welcomed their only child, a daughter, Emma Allison. To say she is a "Daddy's Girl" is quite an understatement.

Soon after moving in together Catherine urged him to get a kitten which started their ongoing adoptions of rescued feral cats and the infamous Cock-a -Poo Rudy. These pets were almost overwhelmed at times by his love and caring for them.

In addition to his dedication to his family, his pets, and the practice of law, Ed was an avid outdoorsman. He was either climbing in the Rockies, going on Himalayan Expeditions, scuba diving around the world, or running marathons with his buddies throughout the 50 States.

Ed was in fact a generous, loving, caring, self-effacing man. The highest compliment of those he admired most was to say they were the "The Real Thing". I believe anyone who knew him feels he is among them.
